How to apply perfume: 5 tips to make your fragrance last longer
- Don’t rub the perfume on your skin.
If you rub the perfume into your skin, the top notes will disappear and evaporate before they have time to settle. The scent notes that made you fall in love with a particular fragrance will not fully come to fruition. You should let the perfume slowly mix with your skin’s natural oils – this is how you make the perfume last longer and smell more unique on you. Rubbing the perfume on your skin also creates friction. It creates heat that will change the scent. Focus on the points where the perfume thrives best – your pulse points.
- Spray the perfume on your pulse points.
Pulse points are on the inside of your wrists, elbows, below your belly button, and behind your ears and knees. This is where your veins are closest to your skin, so you can feel your pulse. These hot spots on your body generate extra body heat, which helps to diffuse the scent naturally. Spray and apply perfume by dabbing it on your pulse points to make the perfume last all day.
- Where you store perfumes matters.
Does it make a difference where you store perfumes? Absolutely! It’s common to keep perfumes in the bathroom, but it’s not a good idea. Here, the steam from daily showers can affect your perfume. Water, humidity and rapid temperature changes can change your perfume’s composition and affect its shelf life. You should also keep your perfume away from bright light. Sunlight in particular can affect the perfume, its shelf life and fragrance properties. Keep your perfume in cold, dark and dry places. The wardrobe and the dresser in the bedroom are good places to store perfumes. Why not get a separate perfume cabinet to store your favourites?
- Spray and then go into your perfume.
The key to making your scent aura pleasant and not overwhelming is to spread it out and not concentrate it in one area. You want your fragrance to complement you and enhance your natural scent. Instead of spraying your perfume everywhere, dab it on your pulse points and then perform “Spritz and step”. Spray your perfume in front of you, then walk straight into it and back out. This will leave a light layer on your clothes and make you smell pleasant without overdoing it.
- Apply the perfume to your clothes.
Also, apply some perfume to your clothes. This is a great way to keep the scent lasting all day. Fragrance interacts with fabrics differently than skin so that it will smell lighter and slightly different. Try spraying some perfume into the air, then wafting your clothes into the spray cloud. You can also spray some on the inside of your coat or jacket. The result is a light touch of your favourite perfume that will go with you wherever you go.

This is an impossible question to answer because we all have personal opinions on the matter. It is good advice to avoid overdosing on perfume on your first dates. Once you get to know your woman better, it’s just a matter of asking what fragrance notes she prefers. It is an outdated belief that asking about preferences regarding scents and perfumes is not manly. Fragrances are an important part of socializing and smelling good is important!
