One of the main reasons for the relative rarity and high cost of agarwood is the depletion of the wild resource. Agarwood or aloeswood is a fragrant dark resinous wood that is formed in the heartwood of aquilaria trees when they become infected with a type of mould. Prior to infection, the heartwood is odourless. However, as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin, called aloes or agar. The resin embedded wood is valued for its distinctive fragrance and is used in many perfumes.
Oud scent oil is distilled from the infected agarwood and it’s price is highly dependent on the oil’s purity. There is a whole range of different qualities on the market, varying with geographical location, botanical species, the age of the specific tree and the section of the tree where the piece of agarwood stems from. Aquilaria agallocha is a winter green tree that grows i northeast of India, Bhutan, Vietnam, Kambodja, the Phillipines and Papua New Guinea.
The global market for agarwood is estimated to be between $ 6-12 billion per annum and has been growing rapidly in the last couple of years.
